I would argue that he does suggest an alternative to the American free enterprise system. In the film, he highlights companies that form a democracy over capitalism. He then argues that democracies take better care of their workers, are more fair, and protect against CEO salary creep. In fact, I believe the film ends with a statement by Moore arguing that democracy is the solution to capitalism.
I found some of the most interesting points of the film to be that the US Constitution has no framework for any economic model... a point often confused in the minds of America. I was fascinated with the FDR speech that describes just that, a plan to build a 2nd Bill of Rights, which does include these aspects. Too bad these laws were never passed. Perhaps it was the passing of FDR, or perhaps it would have failed regardless.
In all, I found the film very interesting, but I agree with your assessment on the failed jokes and lame showboating. I think he does himself a disservice with these stunts. It just turns people off, and narrows his audience to like-minded people.
