Billed as "the ultimate trip" upon arrival in movie theaters in 1968, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY has yet to be surpassed as the most ambitious and cerebral science-fiction film ever made. Stanley Kubrick ushered in a new era of breathtaking special effects of outer space travel in the service of a knotty, ambiguous script (co-written with Arthur C. Clarke) about the nature of human evolution. Moon is just the most recent film to pay homage to 2001 and its famed anti-hero, the HAL 9000 computer. The Fox Theatre Coca-Cola Film Festival screening offers a rare opportunity to see it on the big screen – but don't expect Star Wars-style outer space sound effects or action-movie pacing. $8. 7:30 p.m. 660 Peachtree St. 800-745-3000. www.foxtheatre.org.
