Yesterday and Today, the follow-up to the Field's 2007 debut full-length, From Here We Go Sublime, finds Swedish producer Axil Wilner further mining the elegantly minimal techno formulas that divided listeners the first time around. Long bouts of beats lull the mind with serene repetition. At its strongest, tracks like "Leave It" and the epic closer "Sequenced" prove the Field descends from a long line of '90s electro innovators ranging from the Orb to Wagon Christ to Pole. A cover of the Korgis' '80s broken-hearted pop anthem "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" only makes you want to listen to Beck's melancholy version. At its blandest, the album is aural wallpaper - never offensive, but never too demanding. 3 out of 5 stars
