The Square Peg Award
Morgan either deserves a Golden Sleaze Award for her over-the-top style or an Arnie for sticking up for laudable principles. We'll give her half of each.
Impetuous, intemperate and undiplomatic, the 27-year-old social worker has racked up scores of enemies and embarrassed her own party leaders. She gratuitously trashed Ronald Reagan upon hearing a proposal to name a day in his honor. She dissed House Speaker Glenn Richardson, telling Republicans, "I see some of you want to do what's right, but your leadership won't let you." And she's been the House's reliable scold: "God did not send you here to take people's rights away."
And yet, isn't it refreshing to hear someone so eager to speak truth to power, heedless of the political cost? It's been awhile since the Legislature had such an angry loose cannon. Even though Morgan's tirades are more likely to offend than persuade, she's willingly embraced the role of whistle-blowing pariah. On issues like the reprehensible voter ID bill, she's stood as a moral beacon, shaming other lawmakers even as she alienated them.
Morgan put it best herself while prefacing an emotional diatribe against the immigration bill: "I'm going to come up here and say the things others are afraid to say."
