Visual art: Folk Fest

Fri.-Sun., Aug. 14-16

A little over 16 years ago, FOLK FEST was just a twinkle in the eye of its creator, Atlanta's own Steve Slotin. Now it's grown to be the No. 1 self-taught art show in the world, with more than 100 exhibitions and thousands of visitors annually. Upon its opening, the show was especially unique because many of the featured artists had no formal art training or education, and the exhibitions were constructed using discarded objects, sticks and other materials. On opening night Fri., AUG. 14, everything from paintings to pottery will be on display, and visitors can meet artists Woody Long, Willie Jinks, Michael Crocker, Cornbread and more to discuss the works and get autographs. Through Aug. 16. Free-$15. Fri., 5-10 p.m.; Sat., 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sun., 10 a.m.-5 p.m. North Atlanta Trade Center, 1700 Jeurgens Court, Norcross. 770-532-1115. www.slotinfolkart.com.
