Somewhere around the 13th century, the term "dunce" took on political connotations when it was directed at people of African descent and the lower class in Alexander Winchell's 1895 essay, "Proof of Negro Inferiority." Mixed-media artist Yanique Norman, photographer Jade McCully, and filmmaker T.B. Rambo take a deeper look at society's perception of the word in relation to race, gender and class status, as well as the evolving concept of self and how labels manipulate it, in THE MODERN DUNCE SERIES, opening Fri., JULY 17, in conjunction with the National Black Arts Festival.
