ALL MY LIFE I HAD TO FIGHT: Emancipation and Reconciliation at the Atlanta History Center's Juneteenth Commemoration

Well folks, Independence Day is almost here. A time when citizens across the country go full patriot, drunkenly shooting off fireworks into the night with a sparkler in one hand and a beer in the other. However, July 4 celebrations do not mark independence for everybody. On June 16-17, the Atlanta History Center will host a commemoration of Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration of the emancipation of African-Americans. In this two-day family program the Atlanta History Center engages attendees with immersive theater performances, lectures, and an in-depth program providing tips and techniques for navigating one’s African-American genealogy online. Explore African-American history through Southern cooking with a lecture by Michael W. Twitty, author of The Cooking Gene, or with a series of intimate performances examining the impact of enslavement, empowerment in struggle, and feelings of liberation. Get learnt.

Free. 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sat., June 16; Noon-4 p.m. Sun., June 17. Atlanta History Center, 130 West Paces Ferry Road N.W. www.atlantahistorycenter.com. 404-814-4000.
