CRITIC’S PICK
Through Sat., Dec. 19
The Structure of Ruins & The Second Body, Johnson Lowe Gallery — The work of Washington, DC, native Rush Baker IV is being presented for the first time at Johnson Lowe Gallery, along with a fall group exhibition. Baker, an assistant professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, earned a Master of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in painting and printmaking from Yale University in 2012. Curator Dexter Wimberly says Baker’s paintings make a statement through atmosphere before they make it through image. “Architectural masses surface and dissolve inside fields of smoke, stain, and vapor; grids and ramparts assert themselves briefly, then give way to washes that behave more like weather than like structure.”
Running concurrently at Johnson Lowe is The Second Body, a group show featuring artists Anthony Akinbola, Michael David, Thornton Dial, Victoria Dugger, Donald Locke, Isaac Mehki, Jiha Moon, Phuong Nguyen, Masud Olufani, Fahamu Pecou, Steven Seinberg and Vadis Turner. According to the gallery, swollen silhouettes, skeletal enclosures, encrusted skins, and figures staged as avatars “compose a restless assembly.” — Kevin C. Madigan
